Our greatest need for extra cash seems to come at the worst possible times, often through events we can’t control.

In hindsight we all recognize clearly what we should have done:

- We should have bought that health insurance plan so we wouldn’t be drowning in medical bills
- We should have saved more money when things were good
- We should have sold that stock when it was at its peak
- If only we’d taken that other job we wouldn’t be unemployed
- If only we’d started this business last year when the market was hot

When you are diagnosed with some horrible ailment from cancer to diabetes it becomes nearly impossible to get health insurance or life insurance.

When you really need money it is often hard to get because “we only give loans to those who are credit worthy” or “you’ve got some late payments on your credit report” or “we could give you a loan if you can just give us some collateral.”

So how do you get extra cash?

There are lots of opportunities in network marketing but they really do take months or even years to generate the kind of cash you need if you job is in jeopardy or you oldest is going to college. Not to mention the huge amount of time and that horrible response you get from relatives when you call saying you have this amazing opportunity for them.

You can find a host of scams on the net from “no work, no capital, no sales, no talent, no-fill-in-the-blank required.”

When you are desperate for cash, you want so hard to believe in those promises you fall prey to their well written words. I remember years ago, when I wanted some extra cash, I was reading all of the ads about quick ways of making money by mail. I paid $20 for this special report that must have cost 5 cents to duplicate. It said to send out 200 letters with the prescribed words in it and tell each person to send $5 to each person on the list, then to put their name on the top of the list and send it out to 200 people. The promise was you would make $50,000 in the next 30 days.

I was desperate enough and did just that. I bought 500 names because I wanted even more money, I printed off the letters, then bought a mailing list, bought the stamps, put them all together and took all of these letters to the post office dreaming of all of the cash I would have in just a few weeks…my heart was racing with excitement.

Every day I would race to the mailbox hoping to see it packed full of envelops containing five dollar bills.

Each day I was disappointed.

Finally, two weeks later I got my first response. I was feeling encouraged again, thinking the post office must have misplaced my mail until just recently and finally got it out.

After $450 in expenses of buying the list, duplication, stamps, etc. I made a grand total of five dollars.

I gave up on marketing, direct mail, mail order, or anything sounding like marketing…for over 20 years.

Fortunately I started reading books on marketing, direct mail, sales to get a better handle on how I could grow my consulting business. I realized I’d equated this pyramid scheme with marketing and accidentally written the whole subject off.

What really is needed to get extra cash is to find a working, successful system and use that as a model.

This is a great idea but where do you find a successful business model and how do you identify all of the steps to make that model successful?

Well you could do what I did on several occasions. Read dozens of books, talk to business owners, find investors and throw in a heavy dose of trial and error. If you choose this approach it certainly is not anything resembling quick cash and can take years to generate positive cash flow.

You could buy a franchise and rent their success system. I know a number of friends that have taken this approach but this requires capital, good credit and takes time to put together.

You could rent the system of one the network marketing companies but you would have the same challenge described earlier, it takes time, something you may not have a lot of.

Of course there are many other approaches like real estate, stocks, precious metals, oil and gas, or even currencies. But we’ve all seen recently that these are very susceptible to things beyond our control.

According to an Amex/Harrison survey, half of the millionaires in the US got their wealth from owning their own business.

The great thing about the Internet is you can start a new business in a few hours without capital, employees, long term commitments, or good credit. Since most online businesses don’t make any money, the ease of starting one is not the only criteria needed.

There is an overwhelming amount of information products promising rapid wealth if you just follow their system and I have purchased thousands of dollars of those. But they only told part of the story.

I once attended a $25,000 per person marketing seminar where fifty people were riveted by marketing stories from 8:00am till 2:00am every day. I took hundreds of pages of notes as did most everyone else. Three months later I called over a dozen of the attendees to see how they were doing. Not a single person, who had paid $25,000 for this seminar, had put one thing into practice. The problem, it was information, not a system.

You need a system, a step by step plan to go from start to finish…then just follow it.

How many times have you called into a customer support center and just known without a shadow of a doubt that the person that you were talking to was reading off a script?

While scripts, charts, diagrams, FAQ etc are great….what happens if none of those apply to your situation? They just keep flipping from page to page, reading off random responses but never actually answering the question that you asked. How frustrating is that?

Now here is another question; how much does your support staff know about your products? Do your clients call in with questions about your products that can not be answered unless that exact question is spelled out on a FAQ sheet somewhere?

Does your staff take the time to get to know each of your products or programs so that they can intelligently address your client’s questions?

Most people have a least one company they will not do business with again. Here are some scary statistics:

  • 4% of dissatisfied clients complain
  • 91% of dissatisfied clients will not do business with you again
  • 80% of dissatisfied clients tell ten people
  • 20% of dissatisfied clients tell twenty people
  • Let’s extrapolate that out a bit. If you have had 10 expressive dissatisfied clients, they have told 120 people that your service is poor.

    If you have had 100 expressive dissatisfied clients, they have told 1,200 people that your service is poor!

    Looking at that, can you really afford to have an uninformed or under informed support staff?

    Here are a couple of very basic but effective tips to combat this:

    1. Have your staff review your programs themselves. If you have a large inventory, start at your best
    sellers, and then work your way back.

    2. Inform your staff of any new promotions and any accompanying materials.

    3. If you are releasing a new program; give your staff at least a digital access to review before the questions start coming in.

    4. A well educated staff is an excellent selling tool. It is very easy to cross sell or upsell a customer if you know what they are looking for and what you have in your inventory that will fill that need. (One of my mantras: A client that is given a good recommendation will come back for more. A client that is given a bad recommendation will come back for a refund)

    Remember, 1,200 people turned against your services from possibly 1 mistake, the under education of your staff. Can you afford that?

    This is a hard lesson I had to learn. And also a common mistake I see other people making. And it causes an immense amount of frustration and failure.

    Most likely its a mistake you are making right now too.

    The good news… its easy to fix!

    Our entire life we have been taught to set and achieve goals. From getting good grades, to winning the football game and league championship.

    And as we enter the world of work and business. We are taught great strategies to set goals in our life.

    Here's the problem.

    Goals are about Outcomes. What do we want to achieve.

    In your business it might be…

  • get more traffic
  • increase your optin rate to 35%
  • make $10,000 a month
  • They are the destinations you want to end up at.

    However… listen closely, here's the real secret… you have NO control over achieving your goals or not.

    Instead, you ONLY have control over the inputs, the actions you take that can lead to reaching your goals. The reason is, to achieve those goals (those outputs) require other people you have no control over to do something.

    Let's look at the 3 examples above to make this tangible.

  • get more traffic
  • To get more traffic to your website requires other people to come to your site.

    However, if you instead look at the inputs - the things you can actually do - that would most likely result in the outcome you are looking for. Well, then you can make it happen.

    So you could start up a pay-per-click campaign following the upcoming October issue of Trafficology that is all about PPC traffic.

    Or find a new affiliate partner. Or write and submit an article to some article directories.

    You have control over all of those actions.

    And you can also monitor the results that comes from those actions to see which one most effectively leads to your goal.

  • increase your optin rate to 35%
  • Again, to increase your optin rate requires more of the people who come to your website to fill out your subscription form with their name and email address and pressing the submit button.

    You can MAKE people do that. Instead you can only do your best to enable that result to happen.

    You can test different headlines, or test new submit buttons, or test offering something you think would be more appealing for subscribing, or adding testimonials, or a picture.

    ALL of those things YOU have control over. Those are inputs, actions, you take that could very likely lead to the outcome, your result or end goal, you are trying to achieve.

  • make $10,000 a month
  • Finally, this requires other people to first visit your site, read your page, click on the order link, enter their name, contact info and credit card details and press the button to pay you money.

    If you step back and ask yourself…
    "What actions can I take that will get me closer to the end result I want to achieve?"

    You end up with a list of:

  • increase my traffic
  • increase my optin rate
    (we talked about those - they are actually results you don't have control over but do have actions you can take to move you towards those results)

  • test different headlines for my sales letter
  • increase the value of my offer
  • add testimonials (careful with that one, if you don't have testimonials than that means you have a new output you need to accomplish of getting testimonials)
  • improve your email follow-up messages
  • What Is The Big Lesson Learned?

    Its great to dream, set goals and look towards the future. In fact, if you want to be successful you need to do those things.

    However that gives you a list of the Outputs you want to accomplish… all of which you have no control over.

    So, if you don't follow that up with this next step, then you will constantly be feeling frustrated and not seeing the results you want.

    The next step is to then take those end results and identify the actions you can and should take that will lead you towards achieving those goals.

    These are the things YOU have CONTROL over and are not dependent on somebody else doing something (like visiting your site, opting into your list or buying your product.)

    The late, great Gary Halbert liked to use the word "fungolas" as a synonym for money. I always got a kick out of that.
