Increase Your Website Traffic With These 5 Proven Strategies

If you're like most internet entrepreneurs you've probably spent a great deal of time and money trying to get traffic to your website but either haven't been able to get as much traffic as you want – or the traffic you're getting is completely worthless and untargeted. This is especially true if you're trying to get traffic using banner exchanges, free advertising sites, etc.

In this blog post you'll find 5 methods that have been proven effective for getting massive amounts of high quality, targeted traffic to any website or blog. (in no particular order of effectiveness, I might add. All of these methods can be used with success either alone or in combination with each other)

Let's begin…

#1 — Create valuable content

You may have “heard” this before and simply let it float right back out your other ear, or wherever unimportant thoughts go to… but you need to seriously consider this: When you create valuable content that people learn from and enjoy, you will naturally attract more traffic with less marketing effort.

If your blog post or website article is full of value, it will naturally attract a lot of links because people will want to tell others about it. They will email it to their friends, link to you from their site, blog, myspace, facebook, etc. resulting in tons of exposure for you.

As a result, you'll be getting traffic not only from word of mouth, but also from the search engines because those valuable links are helping you to rank higher. You will notice a snowball effect – more and more people will read it, resulting in even more people telling others about it, and more people linking to you, etc.

Plus, if you are writing material that is truly helpful to people, they will keep coming back to your site on a regular basis to see what else you have written.

#2 — Search Engine Optimization

You probably already know what Search Engine Optimization (or "SEO") is, but for those who are new to the internet marketing scene, here is a brief explanation:

Search Engine Optimization is a way to improve the "ranking" of your website or blog, which is listed in the results when someone searches for a keyword.

When your site ranks high in the search engine results, there is a higher chance of customers clicking over to your site – and the best part is that it is essentially "free traffic", since you don't have pay for each click.

Obviously I can't cover all the ways to optimize a website or blog for high search engine rankings in this one article (there are entire courses creating just for the purpose of teaching SEO), but here are some excellent tips to get you started:

  • Use a keyword research tool to find out which keywords you want to rank for. (which keywords your customer is most likely searching for to find a website like yours)
  • Choose the top 2-3 keywords you'd like to rank for and put them in the title tag of your home page.
  • Create internal webpages targeting the other keywords that are related to the main keyword, and put them in the title tags of those pages.
  • Highlight, bold, bullet your keyword when it appears on your webpage. (don't overdo it, and don't include the keyword 200 times on your page, that's spamming and will most likely get your site banned from the search engines)
  • Get links from quality sites in your industry.
  • Try to get the sites that link to you to use your keyword in the anchor text of the link.
  • Use your keywords in the H1 and H2 tags on your pages when possible.
  • Continue to add well-researched, valuable content to your site often, and on a regular basis.

#3 — Leave comments on other blogs

A very effective way to get traffic to your own blog or website is by leaving comments on other blogs. When you leave a comment, you're allowed to type in your website URL and it will automatically create a link for you. Or, something that is even more effective is to write a valuable and helpful comment relating to what their blog post is about, and then include a link back to a similar post on your blog.

Something like:

I really enjoyed your article about xyz. When I have done xyz in the past, I've found that doing it this other way is also very effective. In fact, I have a post on my blog that goes into more detail on this:

Once again, the more valuable your blog comment is, the more likely it is that people will click on your link to read what you have to say.

#4 — Article Marketing

This is one of the best ways there is to get free, targeted traffic. Write an interesting and informative article about a specific topic relating to your niche.

There are many webmasters and Ezine/newsletter owners who are searching for fresh content. When they use your article on their website or in their newsletter, not only you will be gaining valuable backlinks to your site, but you will also get free targeted traffic from the people who read that article.

Tip: To make more of your backlinks "count", create 3-4 different versions of your article by rewriting it in a different way. That way, the search engines won't mark it as duplicate content and the links you'll gain will be more likely to stick.

Here are some additional tips for getting the most traffic and links from each article you write:

— Optimize your article for the search engines:

  • Write your article with one specific keyword phrase in mind, and use that phrase in your article title.
  • Also, use LSI when writing the article (get information about LSI here)
  • When possible, put your keyword phrase in bullets and/or in bold text.

— Come up with a compelling article title to get the most views to your article.

One great way to do this is go to and click on one of the articles in your chosen category. Then scroll to the bottom of the article and you will see something that says "Most Viewed EzineArticles in the "XYZ" Category".

Take a look at the titles to come up with good ideas for your title.

Other ways to make your article title sell:

  • Make your title a question.
    • Is It Really Possible To Train a Goldfish?
    • Why Don't Your Kids Ever Listen To You?
    • How Do You Write A Compelling Article Title?
  • Show people "How To" do something.
    • How To Start An Online Business
    • How To Give A Great Back Massage
    • How To Get Traffic To Your Website
  • Use numbers in your title.
    • 7 Creative Ways To Propose
    • 5 Foods That Improve Your Mood
    • 3 Characteristics Of Successful Entrepreneurs
  • Show people "how to" do something step-by-step.
    • How To Get Started With Podcasts In 4 Steps
    • How To House Train Your Puppy In 6 Steps

*Make sure to include a link back to your website in your "author resource box". (a pretty obvious one, but sometimes people forget!)

Use your targeted keyword phrase as the anchor text that leads back to your website.

Next, begin distributing your article.

  • EzineArticles
  • GoArticles
  • Searchwarp
  • Article City
  • Buzzle
  • Isnare (purchase credits to have your article mass distributed)

#5 — Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is where someone stores a list of internet resources that they find useful on one central site. It's similar to your "Favorites" folder in your browser, only this list can be seen by millions of other people. Once your site is in a social bookmarking site, other people searching for sites in certain categories will see your site's URL, and since it's something they'll be interested in, there's a high chance they'll click on the link, bringing you free targeted traffic.

Social bookmarking sites are becoming so popular that most of them are no longer restricted to the simple sharing of resources. Users have the ability to rate and comment on resources that they have found. The more people vote on a certain link you have bookmarked, the more exposure it will get. Not only do you get traffic from the Web 2.0 sites themselves, but you also gain valuable backlinks that will help you with your SEO efforts.
