How To Decuple Your Profits
I get invited to be involved in some pretty exclusive high-level business discussions, with some pretty big players.
From time to time, I'll relay some big takeaways from these to you right here on this blog.
About 3 months ago, I found myself sitting in a small meeting room with a handful of people that have pulled off the most successful product launches of Internet history - along with some others quietly doing 7 and 8 figures in their online business.
There were bouncers standing outside the doors to keep out those whose names were not on "the list". No joke.
This is when I first got to meet David De…er, excuse me….I mean Eben Pagan in person.
This is the guy behind a $20 million a year business that includes a popular niche service that helps people improve their dating lives.
He's done some neat things I respect in his business, like successfully branding his "alter identity" in that dating business model - where he goes by the avatar there of "David DeAngelo". (that name was spun out of one of his specific business processes he created)
More on that in a minute…
I have to admit, I learned a lot from him that day.
I'm glad I had my handy moleskin journal with me that day. I just pulled it back out today and realized that I had taken pages of notes while meeting with David…. I mean Eben, in that secret huddle of Internet players, like:
-
Learn and study how people judge the value of information
-
Letting prospects deeper into your knowledge base to taste the value of your information before they have to pay for it. (This is called "moving the free line" deeper) He challenged us to think of our most valuable unique piece of knowledge, and then go give it away for free to our prospects - and watch sales grow. (I know, sounds counter-intuitive, but try it!) The notion is that doing so will cause your best customers to move forward in your sales funnel (and the tirekickers/freebie-seekers/trouble customers, they were never going to by anyway, so no harm done there)
-
How he is more focused on the lessons learned from a product launch than on the frontend revenue generated. I've since gone back through past launches we've done, and thoroughly documented the lessons we've learned, studied them more closely, and the results are exponential improvement. I'm talking revolutionary change!
-
To be sure and build in buffer time to the planning of project timelines (at least 20%) How true. That's the low end.
-
One great takeaway was to go into all major initiatives (launches in this case) with the understanding that "SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG"! during the process and that you just need to know that, understand that, and most importantly, communicate that to the entire team. And when it does, bring it up, get excited about identifying it and get to work on a workaround. Eben says have the attitude, "Hey, no big deal….we knew something would happen….let's just adjust and overcome it." The worst thing that could happen is for someone to try to hide it, ignore it, get discouraged, or worst case, try to "make it go away" on their own privately - and just end up making it worse, severely impacting the launch. He called this "The 1% Factor"… and says this key separates the wealth builders from the amateurs. Huge takeaway.
Some of these things may sound somewhat obvious, or simple. but I challenge you to go back through them and really think through them. These things are powerful when you understand and apply them.
There were many other valuable insights from the pages of notes of what he shared with me, such as:
- Logistics insights
- Technical insights
- Marketing insights
- Communications insights
I left there with a great respect for "The Dating Dude" and his approach to business.
Really more so with his ability to transfer that knowledge to others.
But most of all with his mindset.
That's where success begins and ends.
I'm really looking forward to investing in his new Altitude training.
This is part of what will help us "Decuple our Profits" (Decuple means to multiply by ten) and get to $30 million a year in just a couple years.
We're taking a few people with us!

To Decupling Profits!

PS: About that "pen name" Eben created for himself: David DeAngelo…
That was actually the end result of running one of Eben's specific processes he created and is teaching in his Altitude training.
The name “David DeAngelo” wasn’t just something he pulled out of thin air.
It's a specific process he uses for NAMING his products, personalities, and companies. Hw will be explaining to us why it took him weeks to come up with that name… then teaching the formula he's created that will allow you to come up with compelling names for your products and services fast.

Hey Matt,
Thanks for sharing these insights from your meeting. Best of luck on your blogging and "decupling" your business!
I have definitely had to learn (and, relearn) about adding in that fudge factor when I make my estimates. There's always something…

The idea of giving it away before you sell it is exactly what I am working on now, so it's great to learn that ultra-successful people are using that philosphy as well.

I like the idea of focusing on the name of a product. Very important. And whatever you do, don't be inspired by George Forman, who named all 5 of his boys "George!" (One too many blows to the head!

Matt,
Right on the money, it’s called “Murphy’s Law” and things go wrong all of the time, but how you handle the problem makes all the difference
in the world . Your attitude, will make or
break you!
Cheers,

Hey Matt,
thanks for your generosity… I see and listen to Eben's on his website (video recording) the other day and I was stunned when I heard he mentioned about the name he assumed as David DeAngelo…
I was subscribed to his newsletter and never could expected him to be so successful in any other business, especially in growing a business to the level explained in the video.
Thanks for your insight… I am just starting so cannot join you, but I love to wish you and others who can afford to attend the next Altitude training…
Please keep us posted, I am sure we all benefit:-)
health - harmony - peace and prosperity.
