First, a definition:

Zeitgeist.  N.  German.  "Spirit of the time."

OK, basically, it's a way fancy-schmancy brainiacs say
"what people are talking about."

It's actually extremely important for marketing.

Knowing what people are searching for gives you a little
flavor of the current Zeitgeist at any given moment.
