A Simple Technique to Dramatically Grow Your Online Success
There is a simple technique that is used in all forms of business, but overlooked by most. This technique seems so simple it is often overlooked as something that may be needed by “more challenged” people but not by “me.”
What is this technique that is used by NASA to launch spacecraft? What is this technique that is used by airline pilots each time they take off? What is this technique that is so powerful I’ve used it to help businesses cut costs and increase outputs by over 1,000 percent?
It is the simple technique of documenting your processes.
Most of us are very familiar with projects. We all have heard of project management and seen project charts showing interdependent tasks that form the critical path to success.
So when it comes to developing an online product, project management is a great way to make sure all of the needed tasks are done in the right order and on time for a successful launch.
The key to ongoing success online is not a series of projects, but a number of ongoing processes.
Need for processes
We often fall into the rut of creating a product, launching it and then letting it go on automatic cruise control, only to see the results continue to decline.
That is because we tend to be project oriented, rather than process oriented.
What is needed after product launch is a series of continual steps that are repeated monthly, weekly, or even daily.
What are some processes for online success?
- Pay per click process
- Split testing your website or landing page
- Banner ad advertising
- Article marketing
- Publicity
- Affiliate marketing
Pay Per Click Advertising
Let’s take a look at one example: Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising. Pay per click advertising is not a one time event where you set up a PPC account, upload a bunch of keywords, set the bid price, create an online ad and then sit back and watch the money roll in. Pay per click advertising is an ongoing process that should be monitored and improved upon.
Sample Process Steps
If you were to set up a process description of a Pay per Click advertising process, it might look like this:
1. Do keyword research
2. Set up Google Adwords account
3. Create first campaign
4. Setup tracking codes on your web pages and identify success page (usually the thank you page a person is taken to after they order, or after giving their contact information)
5. Upload keywords
6. Create at least two ads to split test
7. Test, track and tweak. First once a day, then once a week, then once a month:
a) Look at the results of the two ads. Stop the poorest performing ad and come up with a new one to challenge the successful ad
b) Look at the bids for each of the keywords, and see if they need to be adjusted either by the whole adgroup or by the individual word
c) Delete keywords that are costing money, but not producing profitable results
d) Continue to seek and add new keywords that apply to your product
e) Do A/B split testing of landing page to improve results
Notice Step 7 never stops. It is a process, composed of 5 tasks (a-e). You are constantly seeking to improve the performance of your PPC campaign. This is a simplified version of what is actually needed, but you should be getting the idea. By just doing what was described above, you can easily double or even triple your conversions, increase traffic and reduce your PPC costs simultaneously.
I’ve had PPC campaigns that started with a 0.01% conversion rate, and by continually testing and improving, have increased the conversion rates to over 10% (some as high as 70%) when I was building a list.
You Can’t Stop
There are many reasons you can’t stop a process. The competition is making changes trying to beat you, new competitors are showing up trying to take your place, and the search engines are changing their algorithms adjusting who shows up when, even in PPC ads. If you don’t regularly make adjustments and improvements, your success will decline.
Once you have your process documented, you can then look for ways of improving it, and it can also serve as a training piece and set of instructions for outsourcing that function to others so you can focus on other important areas of your business.
