When it comes to copywriting, the one rule of them that’s taught everywhere is to think “WIIFM”, or “what’s in it for me?”

In other words, you should go back and read your sales letter or your squeeze page from the mind of the prospect. Don’t just read it to make sure it sounds cool and catchy… but read it as if you ARE the prospect.

However… I think the whole “WIIFM” concept totally misfires for a lot of people.

After reading people’s headlines and content for their marketing, I notice they often don’t dig deep enough for the benefit. It becomes pretty clear after a while why they can’t convert visitors to buyers.

They simply don’t get it when it comes to understanding what the prospect already knows and doesn’t know by the time they get to the sales letter.

So a better and much more powerful concept than “WIIFM” is to think “why THIS?” In other words, why should I use YOUR product to get in shape? Why should I use this particular technique to find a date? Why should I not continue doing what I’m already doing to make money online instead of using YOUR method?

This falls into the category of knowing what your prospects have already been exposed to in the past.

Ask yourself, what’s the competition like in your market niche, and how well aware are your prospects of other products or services? What are most of them already doing or using?

These are very crucial questions to ponder over when you’re building your business and writing your sales copy. I can’t tell you how many times people miss this boat, especially after they choose to go into a highly competitive market.

When you think about this concept, you naturally begin to brainstorm ways to separate yourself from the competition by offering them something unique.

Offer your prospects the benefit of using your stuff versus your competitor’s in a tough market, and sell them on how your product or service gets them to the underlying benefit much quicker, faster, and MUCH easier.

Make sure your prospect can’t help but think, “Why am I WASTING my time using this other stuff, and why did I NOT learn about this before?” He or she could achieve the dream far more painlessly.

Ever been "in the zone" as you do something? Could be something as common as brushing your teeth, taking a swing in golf, or driving a car.

Doing any of these things seems nearly impossible the first time you think about trying them.

So many steps involved. So much that could go wrong.

Driving a car for the first time is an overwhelmingly complicated task. You've got pedals to work with your feet, controls to work with your hands, mirrors and windows to check and recheck, signs and signals to obey… and forget it if there’s anyone else on the street.

I recently read a great article in Men’s Health called "The Science of Swish" by Christopher McDougall, and it got me thinking. Christopher interviewed three guys: one throws tomahawks with freakish accuracy. One performed delicate surgeries with incredible speed - until he retired and landed in the record books for the most successful consecutive free-throws (2,750 without missing a single one). The third was a professor who’s drawn some pretty interesting connections between primitive man’s ability to throw stuff and the nature of being "in the zone."

Tomahawks, surgery, basketball, and survival of the species.

Yeah, that’s a lot of ground to cover, but it’s all tied together by a couple of concepts that could make all the difference in having an online business that’s actually successful.

Let’s look at this - but first a question:

What do you think works better?

1) Focusing on the end results you want
2) Focusing on the process that produces the end results

(Hint: Think of Nike's slogan.)

Saying you'll get better results by thinking about the end result rather than the process seems counterintuitive. I mean, look at how many "How to" books are out there alone!

Process seems to be the king. Performance is supposed to be the guarantee, right? Look at sports, business, even school, and you can see this hard-wired drive to perform, to get results by following a process.

It’s called a performance orientation. And while it beats just sitting there with no drive, motivation, or action, when it comes to getting results, it comes in a distant second to something much more powerful:

A mastery orientation.

This is how people get extraordinary results, experience extreme levels of personal growth, and live with more satisfaction, happiness, and peace than you might even think is possible.

Let's see what these guys in the article had in common:

The tomahawk guy's technique was basically to look at the target and throw. Fast.

The surgeon basically did the same thing in surgery - sounds a little scary, but it was mysteriously far more accurate and ultimately safer for the patients.

When he retired, he used the same process to get good at throwing free throws. Really, really good. In fact, he made 2,750 throws in a row, and ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records. Again… the same basic process: fast, instinctive, focused on the end result.

Of course, it didn't start that way.

Just go out and start throwing sharp objects in your backyard and see what happens. Or try using some of those sharp objects to do a really quick surgery on someone, for that matter.

What came before the "don't even have to think about it" mastery?

A system.

These guys learned every step of a winning system, practicing over and over until it was second-nature to them. They got so good at what they did that it became instinctive.

How’s this apply to having an online business?

It’s really the same thing.

If you focus on learning and mastering the system then results will come.

If you focus on results only, you might achieve them, but you may never be able to duplicate your success.

As a bonus, with mastery, you'll also usually get much greater results now and long into the future along with a high level of personal satisfaction and happiness because you see the growth you went through and achieved.

Getting into this mastery zone involves moving quickly from your conscious mind to your subconscious. The conscious mind has its place, but not in the zone. It likes to stop and ask questions, point at problems, analyze stuff to death. The subconscious is raw power, instinct, speed.

In fact, that’s what Dr. Joe Vitale’s talking about when he says, "Money loves speed."

In mastery, results seem effortless, fun. You look back on what you accomplished and it’s satisfying because you brought it all and created success from thin air. It’s the ultimate satisfaction.

It’s funny how many internet marketers will use the same type of ads, content, and sales funnel for every type of traffic they get. I realized that this will actually hurt your conversion rates if you’re not aware of the “mindset” your prospects have before they visit your site.

For instance, in pay-per-click, it’s better to drive your traffic to a more content-heavy page and then offer them your product afterwards.

If your traffic is coming from an article or press-release, you don’t have to give them as much content once they get to your site. It can be a simple squeeze page, or sales letter offering them your product directly and you will convert at a high rate since they’re already “pre-sold”.

The whole idea is to “pre-sell” your prospects before they have to make a buying or opting-in decision. The absolute best way to do this is to focus your advertising on content rather than “ads”.

When you do that, it’s no longer about being “sold” in your prospect’s mind to buy your product or to opt-in. It’s about getting value from you before hand, so they’re much more convinced and willing to take action.

If you make all or most of your marketing content-based, ALL of your conversions will increase drastically. I’ve YET to see this otherwise, so I can pretty much guarantee you that that’s going to be the case every time.

Focus on writing articles to share tips, press releases to educate your prospects, and “how to” videos on YouTube. Blogs are also great at generating content-based traffic. The best part is that it’s all free, so it’s mind boggling to me that less effective and MUCH more expensive advertising is still alive today.

The only advantage of expensive, “ad-based” advertising is speed. It can be faster to throw up a pay-per-click ad to generate traffic, than it is to have your article written and distributed all over the net, or your video to really pick up steam. But in the long run, it really doesn’t have an advantage over content-based traffic.

Try focusing ALL of your traffic generating efforts on delivering content instead of ads. Watch your conversions skyrocket.

The bit about being self-taught reminded me of something. A friend of mine was talking about building models as a kid. You know, model planes, cars, tanks, that kind of thing.

See, he was so anxious to get these things built that he didn’t follow the directions that came with the model. He just kind of built them by piecing them together using whatever seemed like the right next step.

In the end, he had something that looked like a plane, car, or tank – but he also had a bunch of “spare” parts, which he kept in a box. The models were supposed to be pretty sturdy, and some were even supposed to be able to do stuff and move. But without these parts in place, they just didn’t work like they were supposed to.

Same thing with making money online.

You hear these messages all the time – build a site and make money online; you’ll succeed; you can set and reach amazing goals. All the gurus agree it’s possible to make money online – a lot of money. And it’s true.

But, that doesn’t mean it’s so easy you can do it without following the directions. Carefully.

Let me give you an example that’s outside the world of internet marketing. Let’s look at building jet airplanes.

What if you hung around a bunch of people who did that for a living? They’ve spent years learning how to build planes. This is what they do. They throw around jet plane-building terminology, discuss the latest tricks and tips they’ve learned, and basically eat, sleep, and talk about nothing except how to build a jet airplane.

It sounds so cool that you develop a passion for building planes, too.

And you might think you’ve heard enough that you could do it based on all you’ve learned.

But do you really think you’d be able to piece all these nuggets of information together to be able to successfully build a jet airplane?

Of course not! And making money online is the same thing.

Look, it would be really great if the world worked like this:

You set your mind to something and just “figure it out on your own” quickly, easily… and for free. Sure, it takes some persistence and determination, but eventually you wind up with great results.

But here’s how the world REALLY works:

I’d like to stimulate your thinking and show you how you can find creative ways to make money for yourself and your family.

You can become more creative and find creative ways to make money just by thinking about things differently.

I’ve had the opportunity of creating over 275 products and services for over 120 companies generating over $2 billion in sales. In many cases we created the first of a kind solution for solving some compelling problem.

But your creativity doesn’t have to be limited to a first time ever products. You can make changes to existing product ideas or use creative ways of getting traffic, creative offers, creative guarantees, creative combinations, creative payment plans, creative word of mouth marketing techniques that become viral, etc.

One of the easiest techniques I’ve taught and used myself on a regular basis is the SCAMPER technique. This acronym represents the first letter of a series of action words that can stimulate your creativity.

S – Substitute

What can you substitute in your product, marketing, content, etc. In the world of electronics this happens all of the time, the substitution of tubes with transistors.

The substitution of transistors with integrated circuits. This brought the unreliable radio from something that sat in a cabinet in your living room, to something built into your headset running on tiny, lightweight batteries.

Online the substitution of ebooks for books, MP3 recordings for CDs and the use of Flash videos instead of DVDs can eliminate duplication, warehousing, inventory, insurance, fulfillment and capital. So what physical information products can be converted to online products? Look at what Wikipedia has done to eliminate the physical encyclopedia business.

C – Combine

What can be combined? The combination clock radio started a whole new industry. A friend of mine found that by adding the audio to her ebook, she increased the number of people buying the combination by 70% compared to the ebook alone.

It could be instead of just writing an ebook about dog grooming you combine it with information on setting up a dog grooming business or combine it with information on dog nutrition as well. One of the most successful combination products I know if is the series of books called Great Books of the Western World.

Each of these books was in public domain, meaning no royalties needed to be paid to the authors. Yet combined they sold for over $1,000 in leather bindings.

A – Adapt

What can be adapted in this process? One story I heard was a semiconductor engineer working for a semiconductor firm was trying to find a way to slice the silicon wafers thinner so they could get more wafers per ingot. All of their attempts resulted in breaking the thin slices in the process.

One day she was watching her husband making a fine cut while some furniture and he slowed the blade down. She asked why and he said it reduced chipping of the wood. She adapted that idea to cutting silicon and it worked perfectly. So what ideas can you take from other industries and apply to your products, your marketing, your customer service, your traffic building, etc.

M – Modify, magnify, minify

What can you change? What can you make bigger? What can you minimize or make smaller? There are many great products out there that could be improved by making just a few modifications. Twenty years ago, I helped a company make one major modification to an existing service, this changed the industry.

We created dozens of millionaire clients, became millionaires ourselves and started a whole new industry. Within 3 years we had 25% market share of a multi-billion dollar industry. One simple example online is going from a single payment to multiple payments for an online product. It will often triple the number of sales.

P – Put to other use

What can you take that you currently have and put it to another use. When electronic spreadsheets were first invented they were designed to help accountants add and subtract columns of numbers.

It was quickly put to other uses from keeping track of contact information, to inventories of people’s books, to action items needed for a project. One of the former presidents of IBM said that there were only a need for 5 computers worldwide. He apparently had only been thinking of its original purpose, calculating the trajectories of cannons for the military.

He didn’t envision the use for weather forecasting, database management, musical creation, photography manipulation, embedded systems in cars, cameras, etc. For online opportunities, one of the greatest potentials is going after new niches. Using the same product for other niches.

If you have a product showing doctors how to improve their waiting rooms, it would probably work for dentists, clinics, tire stores, labor and delivery waiting rooms, department of motor vehicle locations, etc.

E – Eliminate

What can be eliminated? What can be removed? A great example of this was the elimination of the hand crank for cars. One day the founder of the Cartercar Company stopped to help a woman start her car. In the process the crank kicked back breaking his arm and his jaw. He later died of complications related to that incident.

Henry Leland, the head of Caddilac and one of Carter’s friends, commissioned his engineers to come up with a solution…they came up with the electric starter. What can you eliminate for your customer? Can you eliminate time, hassles, steps, risks, learning curves?

R – Rearrange / reversal: What can be rearranged? What can be reversed? I was once asked to help a client build a large office complex. I lead 60 brainstorming sessions, each one focusing on a different element of the building, from parking, to common work areas, to security, to the computer rooms. I found that first few session started slow.

I switched tactics and started the rest of the sessions by asking the question “How can we create the worst _____? They could rattle off answers immediately. We just reversed each answer and it became part of our requirement for that area of the building. What could you do to pay customers to come to you instead charging customers for your product?

One of the mistaken ideas of how to make money has to do with the need to come up with something brand new. That is actually a great formula for failure. The national average failure rate for new product ideas is 85% even from large companies.

Instead, focus on finding products that people already buy and look for ways of improving them. Apply the SCAMPER ideas to them and see what can be done to improve the product, the delivery, the timing, the timeliness, the ease of access, the pricing, the format, etc.

A great example of this was what we did for people who wanted to start an online business. While there is a large amount of great information on starting an online business, we discovered there was nothing that had a simple to follow, step by step method for doing so.

Most products only told part of the story while many were just flat out wrong. We decided to put together a home study course that showed the system we used for generating millions of dollars for ourselves and for our clients.

The first thing we did was write out the ten steps we found that were necessary to create a successful online business. Then we went through each of the people we had talked to that got stuck somewhere along the way and made sure we addressed each of the issue they had from deciding what business to go into, to picking a bad idea, to creating a website, sales page, traffic, etc.

Then we decided to test it out on others to make sure we got it right. We set up a beta group of 50 people and had them go through the steps. Every place they got confused or needed more help in, we would either change the manual or add instructional videos to help them with those areas.

We knew this was not a static one time solution so we also created a membership forum so people could ask ongoing questions about problems they faced. We finally came up with a list of services that if they couldn’t or didn’t want to do a specific part of it themselves, they could get someone else to do it.

The result, is an easy to follow, step by step process that has successful taken customers from nothing to a full time income or others who had been struggling for years to make money online to finally figure out the missing parts and realize their dreams.
