I just looked at the "testimonial" folder on my computer and in 3 months there are already 167 testimonials from Blueprint customers… and we never even asked for them yet. They just sent them to us out of the blue because they were so happy about the course and the results they are seeing from it.

But we made a classic marketing mistake on the first part of our goal.

Providing it to you at a low price.

Now, what I am about to say may seem "counter-intuitive" but it is actually VERY true for most businesses.

It's "Perceived Value" vs "Real Value."

People tend to associate value with the price they pay for a product.

To give you an example I just read about.

In a recent study, researchers had coffee drinkers try coffee from McDonalds and Starbucks. The first costs 50 cents a cup, the other $3 (more than 6 times the price!)

Obviously, you would think Starbucks was hands down the winner of that taste test. Its $3 coffee!

Nope, in the blind taste test people actually chose the 50 cent McDonalds coffee over Starbucks.

However if you were to ask those same people which one they liked better with them KNOWING what they were drinking, they would say Starbucks.

The same could be said between a $500 Mont Blonc pen and a $1 Bic pen. They are probably very similar in quality and results, but the $500 pen appears to be MUCH more valuable.

Everybody said it was priced too low…

Before and after we released the Nitro Blueprint System, all of the big name marketers were telling us it was priced way too low. Even our Blueprint Beta Test members said it priced low.

I guess we were hard headed and made the classic mistake of not listening to what the market is saying. We were set on giving great value at an even greater price despite what EVERYBODY was telling us. (Can you say hard-headed!)

The "Tipping Point" blog post!!

Then, while researching all of the people blogging about their experience and success using the Blueprint, I came across one that pushed my button, BIG TIME.

He said he almost didn't buy because he was assuming it was going to be at least a $1000 course.

Then, when he saw it was just $297 he started to question the value it offered. And he almost didn't purchase it.

Luckily he did and is loving it.

However reading in black and white people are not buying it because the perceived value seems low due to the price… it was like a (good) slap to the face.

– Listen to what the market says, not what you think is right. There is a saying I love: "Make Data Driven Decisions." If all of the data says something, then do that, even if it isn't what you would have chosen yourself. Its not about you, its about what your market and your customers want.

– Sometimes, even many times, by increasing your prices you will actually sell more products (and at a higher price means greater profits) because of the perceived value effect. Testing different price points can be one of the most revealing and biggest impact split tests you can run in your business.

It was very cool!

I go to the Borders bookstore down the street from my house several times a week to work in their cafe. (It's where I go when I really want to get a lot of high level work completed.)

When I was walking out I saw sitting on the front table, with all of the current best selling business books, a brand new book called Inspired Marketing.

Now, the title itself is engaging enough and would have got my attention to look at it.

But I also personally know the 2 authors of the book.

First is Joe Vitale of Hypnotic Marketing.

We have worked with Joe for the past 5 years and am a huge fan of everything he does.

The second author was Craig Perrine who first started out as one of our Product Managers 4 years ago. He then went off on his own and started MaverickMarketer.com

And even cooler, the inspiration for Inspired Marketing came from one of the monthly Hypnotic Gold issues where Joe and Craig first talked about the topic of Inspired Marketing and what inspired it.

I still remember that interview and the story that started it all, and you can read the story in the book.

Would you like to take a stroll with me, back in the history of how I came to learn marketing and business success?

Some of the following I have never written or talked about before. So when one of my most cherished mentors pops his head out from the wilds of Canada to share his knowledge, I thought it would be fun to sit around the campfire and tell some good stories.

If you watched the Orientation DVD in the Nitro Blueprint System, then you probably remember me doing my best David Ledoux impersonation yelling "You Got To Dream Big Dreams". Going in to do that 90 minute training, in front of an audience made up of people from across the world, I was terrified of having to do those 30 seconds of the presentation!

I first met David when I was a nerdy 21 year old college kid in a small college in Iowa, almost 12 years ago. I was struggling to figure out how to be an entrepreneur and David's story resonated with me, even though he lived in this strange place called Canada.

I "stalked" him down online and through some "creative marketing" got him to mentor me. I would like to think he saw all the potential bottled up inside of me! (Or maybe because I never bothered to tell him I was in college, sneaking onto the local dormitory computer in the middle of night to send out emails.)

And it was through David that Matt and I first met each other, trying to figure out the Internet back in the wild and crazy days of the 1990's.

David was also the guy who talked me into going to my first Internet Marketing seminar back in 2001. If you watched the first video in the Free 5-Part Blueprint Video series when you subscribe in the box to the right on this page, then you will remember the importance that event played in my life.

For the past several years he has gone almost completely underground. Traveling the world, living the "4 Hour Workweek" working on his business interests a few hours a week, watching Simpson reruns and Mesquite Rodeo telecasts, and taking up the hobby of Mixed Martial Arts fighting.

An Internet Marketer Turns 12

I've been marketing on the internet since 1996. 12 long human years, and it feels like a century in web years.

That means I'm old…real old. I can pull my green checkered pants up high on my chest, tighten my white leather belt, adjust my bifocals and yell at you kids to get off my lawn!

Back in 1996, we didn't have Adobe Acrobat. In my opinion the ability to create a digital product that no one could mess with changed the game forever. Before we had Adobe, we would email rich text files to people. Or Microsoft 2.0 Word Files. Or Old Wordperfect files.

And screw jobs would edit them, steal them and mess with them. Piracy was rampant. People would steal your ebooks along with the dancing baby and spinning earth widgets on your website!

Everyone zoomed along with 2800 baud modems. But a few of us had vision. I remember in early 1996 I interviewed several millionaires on the telephone on a huge conference call. I had the audio cassettes transcribed by a local girl (there was no Elance in those days!) and then given away on one of my earliest sites. More than 12,000 people downloaded that transcript in '96. Those were record numbers back then!

And then I broke new ground. A young upstart company called Real Audio had a program to convert a sound file into an audio file that could be streamed over the "information super highway". That's what we called the Interweb back in my day.

We had skinny little tubes that pushed data into people's computers. And Rob Glazer had figured out a way to do it with sound. By the middle of '97 I had several hours of streaming audio on my site. I was a pioneer!

It was easy to rank high on Alta Vista. That's what we used to call Google back in the day. Then that Wang kid started Yahoo. I phoned him in early '96 I think to get my site listed.

When a 14 year old John Reese invented the "automatic emailer program" back in '96 we used it to send email newsletters to our friends. This autoresponder-thingy gained steam when my friend Tom launched Aweber. I was one of their first 99 customers. I've been getting royalty checks from them for a decade!

The cool thing about email back in '96 was everyone read your stuff. People got so few emails back then, we'd get like a 99% open and read rate. People would actually thank you for emailing them! Maybe it was the steady diet of awesome TV like Friends, Seinfeld and The Simpsons.

Ah, the good old days. Internet marketing was simpler back then. We walked to school 3 miles each way, barefoot uphill in snow, and we liked it! None of this fancy flash stuff, no YouTube, no wireless, no highspeed, voice-over-Magnum-PI, pay-per-tick, mumbo-jumbo. We made our money the old fashioned way online. We made 3 page static websites and sold them for five grand a pop….

Like any goldrush, the web back in 1996 was insane. There was a lot of money to be made selling donkeys, rope, pans, eggs, picks and shovels. Back then we'd sell the map to the gold mine and hungry marketers would pay us top dollar. Today these lazy Red Bull drinking kids want the map for free, the shovel for free, and someone to dig up the gold for them for free while they sit on their ever-widening behind playing Donkey Kong on their Wii!

You young interweb whipper-snappers listen up! Anytime you feel like complaining, remember this old coots words…"You ain't got no clue how easy it is getting rich on the internet today! Now get off my lawn…."

I'm not a big TV Watcher, other than a handful of shows I TIVO, from Lost to the Wire, and catching the Mavericks struggle through the NBA season.

However something caught my attention so I had the good old TIVO record it for me and I just started watching the past episodes.

It's Oprah's new reality TV show "The Big Give".

Now this is what they need more of on TV!

Instead of showcasing big headed, back stabbing, ego maniac, celebrity wannabes eating goat's innards.

This show showcases the power of giving.

Each week the contestants are given a challenge to make the biggest impact helping others. This week it involved inner city elementary schools in Houston, TX.

The week before they were given $5000 each and 48 hours to make the biggest impact to a complete stranger. One group ended up raising over $150,000 for the oldest orphanage in Colorado.

While it can be argued that in the digital world, e-mail is more personable than a support ticket, you may want to consider these tidbits.

SPAM filters - Now don’t get me wrong SPAM filters are GREAT for your personal e-mail accounts; however, if your settings are too high, you may be missing out on legitimate e-mails. Too low and you will get wanna be Rolex offers and…well… you know the others. I had just three accounts being forwarded to one e-mail address and after a few years we were receiving on average of 20,000 e-mails per day with maybe 5 to 10 being legitimate customer contacts.

Now that is a lot of e-mail to sort though. Just imagine your customer e-mailing you time after time, getting more and frustrated that you are not responding. You are going about your day oblivious to the fact you are about to get blasted on a forum, receive a chargeback, and loose a customer. Not because you did anything but because you did nothing. Or vise versa you receive the e-mail and are just plugging away at their issue, but every one of your responses is gobbled up by their SPAM filter, and they think they are being ignored. With a support ticketing system their ticket is right there and houses all their replies as well as yours.

The e-mail dog pile - You check your e-mail in the morning and are all ready to sit down and reply to all of your quires. Then something major goes down, the e-mails start flying and that morning e-mails get buried further and further down the line. You mean to go back, but you are so buried keeping up with what is coming in. By the time you get back to those e-mails a couple days later, people are e-mailing and calling about the lack of service. The beauty of a support ticketing system is until those tickets are answered they are like little reds flags with a countdown timer on them. When you login, you will not be in danger of not knowing which ones you have already replied to and who is still waiting.

Computer or e-mail crash - If you and a client develop a rapport over an issue in January, your computer crashes in March, then in June they are back asking for that information again, you are in trouble. Many times when the computer crashes the e-mail is gone and you have to start back up from scratch. With a ticketing system, you can just pull that ticket right up and viola there is all of the information.

Accountability and Training - A support ticketing system holds you accountable. When you login, you can see exactly who said what and when. If one person on your staff is giving out misinformation, that is an excellent tool for training purposes. You can actually pull up their responses and show them exactly where the mistake was made and what they can do differently.

Time Management and Trending - Many support ticketing systems give you the ability to enter the amount of time worked for each ticket. This way, you can login at any time and see how much time is spent on what. If you see a trend that product XYZ has a ton of support and the others are all about the same, you may want to give XYZ an evaluation. You can even look at the customer tickets to see if there is a theme among them. If you have 45 tickets and of that 45, 37 are asking where a certain bonus it, that may be something that you want to address in their welcome e-mail. By doing this, you will have cut down the support time for that product drastically. You can also develop a FAQ around the common questions.

All on the same page - If you have multiple staff members that work on the accounts, by giving them the access to the support system, they can read the posts of the previous staffers and know exactly what that client is being told. No he said she said.

These are just a few things to consider when handling your support. Ticketing systems may cost more than plain e-mail service, but in my opinion, they are worth every penny.

Yesterday on the Nitro Blueprint System Member's Only Forum, a member asked a question that is quite common, however the answer is not what you would think.

Mary was doing a phenomenal job going through the first few steps of the Nitro Blueprint System. She picked a great market that excites her and provides a very lucrative business potential.

She created the map of what her business was going to look like as she starts filling in her "Empty Boxes". She definitely had some great ideas and plans in place.

She also had her blog set up, posting on a regular basis and already getting traffic.

Now she was in the process of creating her product when, all of a sudden, doubt set it.

I can relate with Mary, we all have doubt. Even today I go through periods where I question everything and wonder if I would be better off going back and delivering pizzas.

The only difference is I have the experience to know that it's normal, tell myself to suck it up and get back to business instead of letting it hold me back for days, weeks, even for the rest of my life like it has for so many people.

In Mary's case it was doubt caused by something she discovered… somebody else already had a product similar to what she was creating.

She was concerned all those dreams, plans and work she had done up to then was for nothing and she would have to give up this idea and find another one.

So my answer to her on the forum is below - it answers that all too common question about going into a market with competition.

Let me provide you a little different perspective to look at this.

Like you said, you knew what you were doing was good. However when you discovered other sites and books doing something similar it discouraged you. That's normal. We all have a desire to be unique.

However the fact that other people are doing it is a good thing. That means this is a viable market. And in virtually every market (regardless how many people are already doing business in it) there is an enormous amount of untapped potential waiting for somebody like you to take advantage of it.

For the other site you mentioned, I bet only a very small fraction of their potential customers will ever know about them. And of the ones who do, many are not interested in what they specifically have to offer (bad design, bad presentation, bad marketing, etc).

But they would love your way of doing it. (And vice versa).

In business, what really matters is becoming the best marketer in your marketplace and being the best at delivering what your customers want. Doing those two things well (not even great, just good enough) is usually all it takes to beat out more established sites/businesses.

I bet many of the sites and books you found have little or no marketing, poor websites and sales systems, and not much insight into their customers and what else they want that they could provide.

Just imagine when you have your current ideas for your business in place - you will be able to out spend every one of your competitors because your lifetime value of a customer is significantly higher. Plus you will get a large amount of word of mouth referrals and have a more diverse and robust source of traffic. And don't forget the email list you built.

So instead of seeing other people doing something similar as a negative, view it as a positive - they have already proven the market (and are great sources to get ideas from).

But have confidence (eventually in yourself, but for now in the system you are following) that you can out market and out deliver value to customers more than them over the long term by following a proven system like the Blueprint System.

There was a time when I didn't think branding was very important for an internet business.

But in a book called "The Luck Factor", Dr. Richard Wiseman shares something most successful marketers already know - the more times someone sees or hears about you or your company, the more likely they are to buy from you. This is precisely why businesses strive to become a familiar name.

In the book, he reports a study where people were shown a whole bunch of meaningless squiggles. Afterwards, they were asked to report which they liked most.

What's really interesting is this: The respondents preferred the squiggles they'd previously seen over the others (without actually consciously remembering they'd already seen any of the squiggles, or realizing why they made those choices).

According to Wiseman, "This familiarity effect is not limited to squiggles. Without realizing it, we all prefer things we have seen before". This explains why companies are willing to spend millions on memorable slogans and advertising campaigns to keep people remembering them and their products.

Even if you don't have a million dollar advertising campaign to spend on branding, it's still possible to brand your business online by getting your name seen in as many places as possible. In fact, some of the most effective ways to become well known online are completely free. For instance, you can write valuable articles for distribution, give away informative ebooks or special reports, contribute in forums, do joint ventures with experts in your field, and more.
